Full or Part time Minister

Hays Christian Church

About the Organization

Organization Description

Hays Christian Church belongs to the ā€œIndependentā€ branch of the Christian Church/Church of Christ movement. Historically, during school years, our average weekly attendance for the Sunday morning worship service was in the middle to lower 50’s, and in the summer was more often in the middle to lower 40’s. Our property and buildings are debt-free. Historically and presently, we are an outreach-minded congregation, generous in our monthly support of both local and national-international outreach projects, and represented personally on the mission field by numerous former members. Our overseers (elders) provide active and effective leadership, and they work through and in concert with a strong group of assistants (deacons). The church board, comprising both the overseers and the assistants, meets monthly. We have an active women’s group that serves the congregation and community in numerous important ways, a monthly men’s meeting, a weekly newsletter that keeps all our members and associates informed and up to date, one adult Sunday School class, a weekly Bible study at an assisted living facility, and a weekly children’s message and weekly children's church.

About the Position

Position Description

As an INDEPENDENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH, we seek a minister with an appropriate educational and experiential background and a strong commitment to outreach whose personal beliefs and practices are consistent with those historically associated with churches of our kind.

The DUTIES of the minister shall be those commonly associated with this calling, in partnership with and under the direction and counsel of the other overseers of the church. These duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Call on members of the church, associates of the church, and –especially –who are homebound and/or in assisted living or nursing homes and on those persons reasonably construed to be interested in or good candidates for fellowship with and/or membership in the church. We understand the calling ministry to be the first duty of the minister.
  • In addition to active personal calling, the minister should encourage other members of the church to participate in the calling ministry, too.
  • Serve as the principal speaker in providing Sunday morning sermons, but also involve other members of the church in the work of giving sermons in accord with existing practices of the church at this time. At present, members of the congregation other than the salaried minister provide sermons from time to time.
  • Collegially exercise leadership in the scheduling, organization, and implementation of church activities and programs (such as couples ministry, youth ministry, etc.).
  • Participate in the activities of the Ministerial Alliance of Ellis County, Kansas.
  • Participate in the program of the Lakeview Christian Camp.
  • Participate in efforts to advertise the church in the community and region.
  • Explore the possibility of reviving a campus ministry.
  • Work closely and with the advice and consent of the Overseers in all matters.

Our MOST PRESSING PRESENT NEEDS are to attract and retain a critical mass of younger adults with children. We are willing to consider applicants for EITHER A PART-TIME OR A FULL-TIME MINISTRY. The exact SALARY is subject to negotiation between the minister and the overseers and then ratification by both the board and a congregational vote. As a rough guideline, we would be thinking in terms of offering about $30,000 and a parsonage to live in to a full-time minister who lacks substantial prior experience, and somewhat more to a minister with substantial successful experience. Given the cost of renting in Hays, this is a total compensation package worth at least $45,000.
