Dana Goodwin Senior Picture, North Iredell High School

The Dana Goodwin Memorial Scholarship Fund was founded by Friendship United Methodist Church, 907 Friendship Road, Statesville, NC 28625.  It was established in memory of Dana Goodwin, an eighteen year old member of the church.  A tragic auto accident claimed Dana's life on July 1, 1993, only a few weeks after her graduation from North Iredell High School.

The scholarship will be administered annually by the scholarship committee at NIHS, and through Friendship United Methodist Church.  The $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior and will be paid to the college of the recipient's choice.  The memorial scholarship will serve as a loving tribute to Dana and will allow another young person to achieve his or her educational goals.

The scholarship selection criteria is based on Dana's own example of dedication to school, church, and community as well as a willingness to contribute financially to the cost of their own education.  As a Christian, Dana demonstrated her values and influence throughout her entire life.  Her community volunteer activities through the Central Youth Athletic Association included coaching cheerleading and track and field activities.  She also served as editor of the newsletter and was involved in various fundraising projects, including the North Star Shootout Basketball Tournament.

At NIHS, Dana was an active participant in many clubs, track and field, newspaper staff, and many other activities which resulted in numerous awards and honors.  She was and honor graduate with a class rank of tenth in the Class of '93.  Dana also contributed financially to her educational goals by working full-time at Wal-Mart for two years, while attending high school, in order to fulfill her goal of becoming an airline pilot and traveling the world.  Dana is the daughter of Dan and Alice Goodwin and the sister of Holly Goodwin.

As a continuing memorial to Dana, and to help another talented young person to succeed in his or her educational goals, tax-deductible contributions may be made in a single sum or on an annual basis to the scholarship fund.  To be added to the growing list of contributers, checks may be made payable to the Friendship United Methodist Church and designated for the Dana Goodwin Scholarship Fund.  Steve Haynes, chairman of the church's scholarship committee, may be contacted for more information at 907 Friendship Road, Statesville, NC 28625, or by phone at 704-876-0555 or 704-546-2687.
